Citizen Advocacy Scheme

|
Citizen Advocacy Scheme is enabling people with memory concerns to
maintain independence and achieve wellbeing, through meaningful activity
and the pursuit of interests Advocacy is a way of supporting people through partnership. What is Citizen Advocacy? It is a one to one partnership of a trained Volunteer Citizen Advocate and a person who is not in a strong position to speak out for themselves. How might a person with dementia, living in a care home setting, benefit from Citizen Advocacy? In the care home environment it is essential that people maintain their rights, and continue to have an independent voice about their own daily life. There may be relatives or friends able to represent a person’s interest in this way, but when this is not available then Citizen Advocacy has a vital role. Who is eligible for the scheme? The scheme is available free of charge to anyone over the age of 55, who has dementia and is living in a Nursing or Residential Care home in the Preston & South Ribble area. Who is involved in provision? Trained Volunteer Citizen Advocates who are supported by our Age Concern Advocacy Officers. What would a Volunteer Citizen Advocate do? • Share an ongoing partnership with an older person for a small number of hours on a regular basis. • Develop through friendship, a relationship based on rights and representation • Empower the older person through Advocacy, by being a listening ear and a voice. Representing the partners interests and concerns as if they were their own. Further information about this scheme is available through contact with: Citizen Advocacy Officers on 01772 552886 |
