Who can receive this service? The service is mainly oriented toward senior members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community or their carers who would benefit from a befriending and support service sensitive to their specific needs and social expectation. We also understand that aspects of sexed and gendered identity are not 'fixed' and sometimes do change, for example some people who understand themselves to be heterosexual may find themselves having homosexual feelings toward others. People may have fleeting affinities with issues of gender diversity that may cause some anxiety and stress. Therefore the service is also open to anyone whose life is touched by issues of gender diversity and difference. Who will provide this service? The Friends of Dorothy Project at Age Concern Preston and South Ribble has trained staff who understand many of the specific needs of senior members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. They are complimented by a team of volunteers with specialist skills and experience to allow them to spend quality time with each person on a regular basis. Prior to participating in the project all staff and volunteers are security checked having applied for an enhance Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Disclosure. They are trained to respect issues of privacy and confidentiality and issues of data protection. How much does the service cost? The service funded by the National Lottery and is free of charge to service users. What happens next? After contacting us the service user will be visited by a member of the friends of Dorothy Project Team or by meeting at a mutually convenient place to discuss how the service can meet the service users needs. If the service user feels they would like to take advantage of the befriending/support service a volunteer will be carefully matched and be introduced to the service user as soon as possible.
