Lesbian Gay Bi-sexual and Transgender Support (LGB&T) - Older and Out
Older and Out is the name of the award winning, Lottery funded service provided by Age Concern Central Lancashire for members of the older Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGB&T) community or people who may be affected in some way by older LGB&T issues – like a friend or relation of an older LGB&T person.
Since 2007 Age Concern Central Lancashire has been providing support to the older LGB&T community of Lancashire by offering a wide range of free specialist, informal and friendly services - receiving an ‘Award of Excellence for LGB&T Community Organisation’ at the 2013 National Diversity Awards.
The Big Lottery funding for the project ended in September 2017, but the legacies from the project are;
• Older and Out - Older LBG&T Social Group
The social group meet in Preston on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month and meet at;
Ham and Jam Café, 50, Lancaster Road, Preston, PR1 1DD 3.00pm - 5.00pm.
It provides a safe and comfortable environment for people who may feel isolated, are coming out or are new to the area. We realise it can be challenging to access a group on your own, and it can definitely be difficult to walk into a room full of strangers, but many people soon adapt and discover an environment where they can make new friends, feel safe, and not be judged. The group is run by and for Older LGBT people, so if you feel like you need some support or more information, please go along for a chat they are there to help you!
• Older and Out LGBT Awareness Training for organisations
Today, understanding and responding to the needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGB&T) people is no longer a case of good practice. It’s an essential requirement for organisations providing services, whether in the private, public or voluntary sectors. New legal protections and changes in society mean that LGB&T people are more visible in all walks of life and are more likely to expect treatment that is relevant and doesn’t discriminate or exclude.
Our research has shown that many care organisations working with older people are often unaware of the issues older LGB&T people face in later life, so in order to bridge this gap we are currently delivering Awareness training across Lancashire.
A recent estimate is that every fifteenth potential older service user is Lesbian, Gay or Bisexual, whilst one in 200 will be Transgender, and based on the Office of National Statistics projections, by 2031 there will be 1.4 million Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual people aged 60 and over.
As a charity supporting older people, Age Concern Central Lancashire would like to offer organisations valuable LGB&T awareness training, call (01772) 552869 for costs and details.
