Read our volunteer Sally's story below:
My name is Sally and I became a volunteer at Bamber Bridge Shop in 2010.
Due to health problems I am unable to take on full time work and am on state benefits. I wanted to give something back to the community by taking on some voluntary work. I chose Age Concern Central Lancashire because it is a local charity supporting local people, which is very important to me.
The experience of volunteering has changed me in many ways. I have gained in confidence within myself and in what I am capable of doing within the shop environment. I really enjoy chatting and having a laugh with the other members of our volunteer team. Coming to the shop gives me purpose when I get up in the morning and is great fun too.
As we are very much part of the community in Bamber Bridge we have lots of regular customers, so it is lovely to be able to pass the time of day with them.
The shop has a relaxed atmosphere but a professional one, and as a part of the team I am proud of our shop and the work we do to help support the other services of the charity.
I hope to continue to volunteer well into the future. I find volunteering fulfilling and it gives me a sense of purpose. So to anyone out there contemplating volunteering I would say go for it and give a try, giving your time can be most satisfying.
