Supporting Older LGB&T

1:1 Buddying Service

Sometimes we can have all the will in the world to get up and try new things and meet different people, but it’s often our confidence that holds us back. Feeling lonely, having mental health issues, being new to the area, coming out of a relationship, or just coming out, can all be challenging barriers to being the person you want to be and achieving your goals – this is where the ‘Older & Out’ Buddying service comes in.

‘My weekly visits from my 'Older & Out' buddy has really helped me to come out of my shell since I accessed the service a year and a half ago. I go with my buddy to the social group in Preston and the Luncheon Club once a month. I’ve also successfully abstained from alcohol, I really hadn’t realised how much being alone was affecting me, but now I’m not alone. It’s wonderful.’ Mark – Older & Out Service user

We can offer ongoing visits and meets with a volunteer buddy, who can support you and guide you through difficult times. The buddying service is aimed at those who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender over the age of 50, and who live in the Lancashire area.

Whether it’s just meeting up for a brew and a chat, attending a group together, or encouraging you to go it alone, our befrienders can help you to be the person you want to be, and challenge those negative thoughts we all have from time to time.

‘I just wanted to say what a great service you have and how much I have appreciated my visits and the social groups. I have moved on so much since first contacting you a year ago and my ‘Older & Out’ Buddy has helped me do that. I now have friends, some who have gone through a very similar experience to me and as a result, I now know I’m not the only one who is ‘Older & Out’.’ Sue – Older & Out Service user

Making new friendships can be a difficult process for all of us, and sometimes it can be intimidating to get out there and meet new people. Befriending an ‘Older & Out’ Buddy can encourage you to do this, and maybe inspire you to take up a new hobby or join in an activity you have always wanted to do…
